From Library Journal
In this new book, part of a series of scholarly books deemed of interest to some general readers, Dorman delves into the works and careers of scholars and writers to give a detailed study of a 20th-century intellectual movement that stressed regionalism and agrarian principles. During the 1920s and 1930s as a reaction to modern mass culture, noted figures such as Willa Cather, Mari Sandoz, B.A. Botkin, Lewis Mumford, and the Southern Agrarians promoted the simplicity and virtue of nonurban life. The movement was ultimately unsuccessful. While presenting regionalism as an intriguing subject, this work is hampered by an overly pedantic style that features sentences that are paragraph length and paragraphs that are page length. A lack of editing and an assumption that the reader is familiar with all intellectual history will limit the appeal to the most ardent academicians.- Gary Williams, Southeastern Ohio Regional Lib., CaldwellCopyright 1993 Reed Busin (more…)
